Wired mag. has a terrific article about spam. It's an interesting read, though a bit long.

My view:
"Free" software is seldom free. It almost always comes with a little surprise package, hidden in the program code, called spyware. The grandaddy of 'em all was "Gator", now called "Claria", and the concept has spread like wildfire, as we all well know by now. Just be aware, free software is potentially damaging to your computer security and your mental health. Be careful out computing is like safe sex, ya better have protection!!
